Thanks to the work of Canada’s SeaChoice, Overwaitea Food Group is set to become the first Canadian retailer to make closed containment farmed salmon, produced by FishWise producer partner SweetSpring Salmon, readily available to its customers.

SweetSpring received national attention early in the year when it received a “Best Choice” ranking from the Monterey Bay Aquarium, a first for any farmed salmon.

Closed containment salmon like SweetSpring is more sustainable than net-pen farming of salmon in many ways. First, the risk of escapement is eliminated, as the systems do no connect to natural waterways. For the same reason, sea-lice and pollution concerns are non-issues. Advancements in technology continue to improve the energy efficiency of closed containment systems and alternative energy sources offer promising ways to further reduce their carbon footprint in future. SweetSpring has also made feed improvements to reduce the amount of wild fish in the feed used to raise their salmon.
