Third Party Support Helps Improve Greenpeace Scores

Retailers that topped the Greenpeace Supermarket Seafood Sustainability Scorecard (June update) boosted their scores by partnering with Conservation Alliance for Seafood Solutions participants, such as FishWise. All fifteen FishWise retail partners continued to score “Good” at 7 of 10 and above, ranking better than the entire top 20 (by sales) national chains. This demonstrates how valuable and powerful NGO-seafood business partnerships can be in helping policy development, initiative support, sustainable product promotion, and moves away from red list species. These measures are applicable to companies of any size and enable future seafood availability, improvements in marine ecosystem health, positive recognition, and strong sales. All top 12 scoring companies have partnerships with Conservation Alliance members that use the Common Vision (www.solutionsforseafood.org) and its six steps as founding principles for their accomplishments.
Improvements that occurred among major retailers included Wegmans and Ahold USA scoring a 6, while Whole Foods’ score showed no improvement at 5. Several other large retailers improved their scores to make the 4-6 “Pass” category including Target, Safeway, Harris Teeter, and Wal-Mart. All of the remaining top 20 retailers (by sales) received failing scores.
